Good morning. If you haven't applied to any colleges yet, please read the information below. This only pertains to students who are applying to colleges through CFNC. Please let me know if you have any questions. Many colleges and universities in NC have opted to waive fees for the 26 counties included from Wednesday, December 4th at 7:30am - Friday, December 6th at 5pm when they start on CFNC.org. You can find this list on the cfnc.org/WNC site, but here is a direct link as well. This event is intended for those students who could not participate in College Application Week in October due to Hurricane Helene. Accordingly, these counties are eligible for the fee waiver: Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, Clay, Cleveland, Gaston, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Lincoln, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Swain, Transylvania, Watauga, Wilkes, and Yancey. In order to find the fee waiver, students MUST begin on CFNC.org. If the college's application is on our website (many are), the fee waiver will be tied to the county listed by the student on the application in the permanent address section. If there are any questions, students can reach us at 866-866-CFNC, or the educators are welcome to reach out to their Associate Outreach Director. If the college application is linked off from CFNC, the college will handle the fee waiver on their end. If there are questions about this, please reach out to the college's admissions office directly.

The time is upon us! The 2025-2026 FAFSA is now open, and we are excited to help all college-bound students complete it. There are a few opportunities to do so! On December 10th, we will be hosting a FAFSA Day at Franklin High School in the Media Center Computer Lab! You or parent/guardian(s) can sign up for a time slot so that both you, and them, can complete the full form together. The form is estimated to only take an hour to complete. There are 15 slots available for each session and it is recommended that whoever is considered a "parent contributor" be there as they will need to sign their portion before the student can submit. Mrs. Ensley, a financial aid representative from SCC, as well as myself will work alongside everyone to complete this process. We will be hosting more FAFSA Days in Jan. and Feb. as well! For those dates, a financial aid advisor from WCU, SCC, as well as our CFNC regional representative will be there! I highly encourage families who need Spanish translations for the FAFSA to attend at these later dates as our regional representative is versed in Spanish. If you would like to complete it earlier and still need that support, please let me know and we can do so in a one-on-one meeting with Mrs. Navarro! There are a few steps that need to be completed, such as creating an FSA ID, as well as a list of materials to bring below. FSA IDs NEED TO BE CREATED AT LEAST 5 DAYS BEFORE! Please do not hesitate to reach out if you need help with these steps! If you cannot attend these events, or do not feel comfortable meeting within a group setting, there is always the opportunity to schedule a meeting with me to complete it as well! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Break -Becka Dulaney https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1SuuCB5SKJgv_t8wtAPXba8poIHmDxdOjt72gnIZNnZw/edit?usp=sharing

The CFWNC scholarship applications for the 2025 award year are now available on this website: https://cfwnc.org/students/scholarship-directory Scholarship application deadlines vary by program, but the majority of the scholarships have a student application deadline of January 22, 2025. Students must submit their applications online (along with the required attachments, including two recommendation letters) by the stated deadline. Only completed applications submitted by the deadline will be considered. Some of the scholarships on this website do not apply to you, so please check the eligibility requirements of the scholarship before you apply. CFWNC utilizes SmarterSelect for the scholarship applications, and each scholarship program has its own application link, located under the “To Apply” section on each scholarship webpage. SmarterSelect is a text-friendly software and students can receive text notifications regarding their applications as long as they “OPT-IN” and enter their mobile number when creating an account (please let them know this is an option).
